Mormugao Port to Sign 24 MoUs for Capacity Expansion and Smart Port Upgrades

17

The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is leveraging the India Maritime Week 2025 event to secure significant investments and advance its long-term strategy for capacity expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainability goals.

Investment and Capacity Expansion

The MPA is set to sign 24 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) valued at ₹3,000 crore (approximately 380 million USD) during the India Maritime Week. The primary goal of these investments is to increase the port’s annual cargo-handling capacity from 65 million metric tonnes to 100 million metric tonnes by 2035.

Infrastructure Redevelopment Projects

The upcoming agreements will support several key infrastructure improvements:

  • Berth 9 Redevelopment: The former iron ore mechanical berth (Berth No. 9) will be redeveloped into a 350-meter-long berth to handle both iron ore and general cargo, accommodating larger vessels.
  • Cruise Terminal Upgrade: Another berth is slated for an upgrade to host four domestic cruise vessels, significantly enhancing the port’s tourism capacity.
  • Smart Port Technology: The port plans to become a smart port by adopting advanced technologies such as 5G to improve operational efficiency and communication.

Sustainability and Green Port Initiatives

As India’s first green port, MPA is committed to expanding its renewable energy capacity:

  • Current Solar Capacity: The port already generates 3 MW of electricity from its in-house solar plant, covering 100% of its current consumption.
  • Planned Solar Expansion: An additional 2 MW solar plant is planned to support the port’s increased power needs, particularly with the new cruise terminal becoming operational.

India Maritime Week 2025 Event Overview

The event itself is a major national initiative, organized by the Indian Ports Association under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways:

  • Dates and Location: October 27 to 31, 2025, at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai.
  • Scale and Impact: The IMW is expected to host over one lakh (100,000) delegates, 500 exhibitors, and representatives from over 100 countries. It aims to generate investment opportunities exceeding ₹10 lakh crore (approximately 128 billion USD).
  • MPA’s Role: MPA will feature its modernization, cargo-handling capabilities, cruise terminal development, and sustainability efforts at a dedicated pavilion.
  • Key Speakers: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to deliver the keynote address at the Global Maritime CEO Forum.
