Ship Critically Listing Off Kiel-Holtenau

1954

On July 14, 2017, the “Mosvik”, enroute from Riga to Creeksea, developed a list on the Holtenau Anchorage when approaching the locks of the Kiel Canal. The ship first listed to starboard.

Then it heeled 30 degrees to port, and the crew of 12 only kept it from capsizing by slipping the deck cargo of plywood. About 25-30 bundles of wood with about 40 cbm landed in the water of the Kiel Fjord. Tugs, boats of the water police and the DGzRS attended.

A helicopter was monitoring the situation from above, ship traffic was hampered by driftwood. The crane ship “Griep To II“ and the work boat “Schwartenbek“ were alerted to recover it. The locks remained closed until the drifting logs were recovered. The ship dropped anchor off Holtenau and stabilized. It was escorted into the East Shore Port in Kiel in the evening by the tug “Bülk”.
