Horisont Energi, a Norwegian clean energy company, and the Port of Rotterdam have consented to transport blue ammonia from Norway to Rotterdam, says an article published in MFN.
About the agreement
According to the agreement, Ammonia will arrive at the port of Rotterdam after being produced from natural gas in Northern Norway and will be distributed throughout Northwestern Europe.
Barents Blue, a project of Horisont Energi, located in Finnmark, Northern Norway, is the world’s first large-scale blue ammonia plant, with plans for CO2 storage offshore.
Importance of blue hydrogen
“There’s an important role for blue hydrogen if we want to realize the international climate ambitions. This is because, especially in the coming years, there will not be enough green hydrogen to meet the demand. We’ll need every possible solution. We, therefore, focus not only on the green but also blue, just as we don’t only look at local production but also imports”, said Nico van Dooren, director of new business at the Port of Rotterdam.
Outline of the Project
In addition, Barents Blue’s final investment decision is due by 2022. When operational, the facility has a production capacity of 3000 tonnes or one million tonnes per year of ammonia per day. By 2025 Blue ammonia can be sent to Rotterdam. Ammonia, a hydrogen supplier, is one of the best fuels for decarbonizing the shipping sector for the net-zero CO2 emission of ammonia.
