MPA And ABS Renew Collaboration For Maritime Innovation And Safety

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have renewed their multi-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance collaboration in:

  • Research and development

  • Talent development and workforce upskilling

  • Support for startup maritime businesses

  • Regulatory alignment

This renewal further strengthens Singapore’s role as a global maritime hub while advancing ABS’ strategic initiatives in the region.

Key Initiatives Under the MOU

  • Establishment of the ABS Singapore Maritime Safety Centre

    • A state-of-the-art facility to provide immersive training for seafarers and maritime professionals.

    • Aligns with MPA’s Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF).

    • ABS is investing USD$4.5 million, creating new employment opportunities in the region.

  • Advanced Training for Future Maritime Needs

    • The Centre will employ virtual reality and game-based training to simulate realistic maritime scenarios.

    • Training will focus on the safe handling of alternative fuels like ammonia and methanol.

    • Professionals will also learn about battery and electric propulsion systems.
