  • MPA Singapore is partnering with AWS to develop AI-powered solutions like the Maritime AI–ML Digital Hub, optimizing fuel use, route planning, and emissions reduction.
  • The Alliance for Future Maritime Talent (AFMT) is upskilling maritime professionals, ensuring they adapt to new digital and sustainability trends.
  • MPA is implementing digital ship identities and an AI-enabled Vessel Traffic Management System to enhance maritime safety, efficiency, and paperless operations.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is proactively addressing the evolving demands of the maritime industry by fostering innovation, sustainability, and workforce development. Through strategic collaborations and initiatives, MPA aims to equip maritime professionals with the skills necessary for the future.

Embracing Digital Transformation and Sustainability

In April 2024, MPA partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support the maritime industry’s digital transformation and green transition. This collaboration focuses on leveraging cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital twin technologies to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability within the sector. A key component of this partnership is the development of the maritime AI–ML Digital Hub, the first of its kind in the ASEAN region. This hub enables the maritime industry to pilot innovative AI and generative AI capabilities, optimizing routes, fuel consumption, carbon emissions accounting, and facilitating just-in-time arrivals to improve operational efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Enhancing Workforce Skills through the Alliance for Future Maritime Talent

Recognizing the need for a future-ready workforce, MPA and the Singapore Maritime Foundation established the Alliance for Future Maritime Talent (AFMT) in September 2022. This alliance, in collaboration with industry partners, aims to equip maritime professionals with new skills to navigate the industry’s transformation. The AFMT works closely with industry and unions to implement and review the adoption of emerging maritime skills, focusing on both seafaring and shore-based competencies. Additionally, the Tripartite Advisory Panel (TAP) was formed to support the AFMT by engaging stakeholders and gathering industry feedback to identify future skills and competencies required in the maritime sector.

Piloting Digital Ship Identity and Advanced Traffic Management Systems

MPA is also trialing the use of digital ship identities in maritime applications such as digital port clearance and digital bunkering. This initiative aims to make electronic transactions more secure, trusted, and efficient by eliminating the need for physical ship stamps and wet ink signatures, accelerating the transition towards truly digital, secure, and paperless operations.

Furthermore, to strengthen vessel navigational safety and efficiency, MPA is developing an AI-enabled Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS). This system will feature advanced data analytics to identify traffic hotspots and machine learning capabilities to predict collisions, enabling vessel traffic officers to manage higher volumes and more complex vessel traffic safely.

Through these strategic initiatives, MPA is embracing change to shape a resilient and future-ready maritime workforce, ensuring that Singapore remains a leading global maritime hub in the years to come.
