MRG Investigates Safety And Environmental Risks Of Alternative Marine Fuels

87

The Maritime Risk Group (MRG) at the National Technical University of Athens is focusing on the safety and environmental challenges in the shipping industry’s transition to cleaner fuels, particularly ammonia.

Addressing Ammonia as a Bunker Fuel

MRG’s research highlights the shift from limited cargo operations to the widespread use of ammonia as a bunker fuel. This transition introduces new technologies and operational measures that pose significant safety and environmental risks. The group’s work aims to understand these risks and develop methods for the safe integration of ammonia fuel technology.

Advanced Assessment Methodology

MRG has developed a methodology for a tailored, ship- and route-specific assessment of alternative marine fuel technologies. This approach combines dynamic simulations with multi-criteria decision analysis to evaluate the feasibility, performance, emissions, and energy costs of various propulsion and energy supply systems.

Upcoming Conference Presentation

The MRG will present its methodology, applicable to ammonia, methanol, biofuels, hydrogen, and battery power systems, at the Annual Conference of Maritime Technology organized by the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Technology (HIMT) on 10-11 December. This presentation will showcase their innovative approach to assessing alternative fuel technologies.
