Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), headquartered in Switzerland, has marked a historic milestone by becoming the first container shipping company in the world to operate a fleet of 900 vessels. This achievement was sealed with the recent delivery of MSC GERMANY, a 16,000 TEU LNG-powered “maxi-neo-panamax” containership. The fifth of twelve sister ships ordered from a Chinese shipyard in October 2022, highlighting MSC’s commitment to greener and more efficient shipping technologies, according to gCaptain.
Fleet Composition and Global Operations
MSC’s fleet now comprises 609 owned and 291 chartered vessels, serving a vast global network that includes its controlled carriers—Medlog, Log-In Logistica, and WEC Lines. With this fleet, MSC commands a total transport capacity of approximately 6.47 million TEU, giving it a substantial lead of nearly one million TEU over its nearest competitor, Maersk. This scale reinforces MSC’s leadership role in shaping global container logistics.
Future Expansion and Strategic Growth
The company’s growth trajectory remains robust, with 132 vessels currently on firm order. This puts MSC on a path to potentially operating a fleet of 1,000 ships in the coming years. Alphaliner includes in its fleet count vessels under long-term bareboat charters with purchase obligations—considered ‘quasi-owned’—so long as they are managed in-house by MSC. This flexible yet controlled approach continues to support MSC’s scalable expansion, consolidating its dominance in the container shipping industry.
