MSC Expands Reach: Secondary Port Calls In India

158

MSC, a prominent shipping carrier, is strategically opening secondary port calls in India to cater to emerging markets driven by the country’s growing manufacturing sectors. This move aims to facilitate closer proximity to shippers in untapped regions, fostering economic growth and trade expansion.

Feeder Service Launch: Paradip-Colombo Route

MSC has initiated a container feeder shuttle service between Paradip in Odisha, India, and Colombo port in Sri Lanka. This inaugural sailing marks the beginning of potential trade growth in the region, with the carrier eyeing significant expansion opportunities.

Incentives and Subsidies: Paradip Port Authority’s Offer

To incentivize container lines to explore commercial opportunities at Paradip Port, vessel-related charges have been significantly subsidized by the port authority. A notable 75% discount on charges, along with other incentives, aims to make port calls commercially and operationally viable for shipping lines.

Government Support and Trade Potential: Odisha’s Emerging Market

The Odisha government’s offer of viability gap funding (VGF) further enhances the attractiveness of Paradip Port for shipping operators. With a focus on compensating operators and stimulating trade, this support aligns with the port’s efforts to diversify its cargo mix and tap into the growing containerized trade potential of the region.

  1. In view of the deepest upcoming Vizhinjam International container transshipment terminal at southern most tip of India, hope MSC will bring large mother container vessels there. Containers could be further moved all over India by road and rail much faster and cheaper, with a significant reduction in CO2
