Zhoushan Changhong International, a leading Chinese shipyard, has secured a significant contract with MSC, the world’s largest container shipping company, to construct twelve 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The order marks the latest collaboration between the two companies, building on previous orders for large dual-fuel vessels designed to meet the growing demand for greener shipping solutions.
Expanding MSC’s Fleet with Advanced Vessels
MSC’s new order for twelve 19,000 TEU ships follows its previous orders at Zhoushan Changhong for ten 11,500 TEU and ten 10,300 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The keel laying for the third and fourth 11,500 TEU vessels has already been completed, showcasing the shipyard’s progress in delivering these advanced ships. These vessels are equipped with LNG-fueled and ammonia-ready propulsion systems, making them ideal for routes between central Europe and China or America.
Strengthening Zhoushan Changhong’s Production Capacity
The new contract with MSC enhances Zhoushan Changhong’s reputation as a premier builder of large containerships. The shipyard emphasizes its commitment to innovation in green ship products, aiming to increase its production capacity for large-size containerships. This contract underscores the shipyard’s capability to meet the demands of major shipping lines like MSC for environmentally friendly and efficient vessels.
MSC’s Strategic Growth and Market Position
With this new order, MSC continues to expand its fleet, adding to its already substantial order book. The company has 1.2 million TEU of capacity on order, equivalent to 20% of its existing fleet, as reported by analyst Alphaliner. MSC’s current share of global container ship capacity stands at 19.8%. The unexpected improvement in container shipping markets, driven by strategic diversions via the Cape of Good Hope, has prompted this latest round of new building orders, reinforcing MSC’s leadership in the industry.
