During the second weekend of January, several maritime incidents occurred near Malaysia and Singapore, according to Safety4sea.
Crew Rescued
On January 12, 2025, a Malaysian-flagged tanker sank off the coast of Abu Bakar Maritime Base (ABMB), Malaysia. Following a distress signal, Malaysian authorities launched a search and rescue operation.
The eight Indonesian crew members successfully abandoned the ship and boarded an emergency raft. They were subsequently rescued by a nearby Indonesian vessel and transported to safety in Batu Ampar, Batam, Indonesia.
The Southern Region Marine Department issued a warning to nearby vessels regarding the incident and advised caution in the area. The search and rescue operation was concluded after all crew members were confirmed safe.
Another Incident
On January 12, 2025, a separate search and rescue operation was launched by MRSC Johor Bahru to address a tanker fire located southeast of Tanjung Piai, Malaysia.
Five tugboats successfully contained the fire. All 14 crew members were rescued, although one Indonesian crew member was swept into Singaporean waters and found unconscious. He was immediately transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
The collaborative efforts of Malaysian and Singaporean authorities ensured a swift and effective response to the incident. Fortunately, no oil spill was reported in the area.
