Proman Stena Bulk, a collaboration between Stena Bulk and methanol producer Proman, recently christened its last two methanol-fueled tankers, Stena Provident and Stena Progressive.

Ceremony Acknowledgment

The ceremony took place at Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd (GSI) in China, attended by representatives from the companies and the local maritime community.

The decision to name the vessels at GSI acknowledges the shipyard’s significant role in constructing the joint venture’s fleet, developed over three years, even amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Stena Bulk, Proman, and GSI collaborated closely to build these methanol-powered tankers, setting a blueprint for the industry’s future.
  • At the naming ceremony, Alicia Schnabel and Ambassador Marie-Claire Swärd Capra were named godmothers of Stena Provident and Stena Progressive.
  • These 49,990 DWT tankers will significantly reduce emissions, consuming 12,000 tonnes of methanol annually, resulting in an 80% reduction in NOx, minimal SOx and Particulate Matter, and a 15% cut in CO2 emissions compared to traditional marine fuels.

Strategic Milestone

Stena Provident and Stena Progressive feature top-tier MarineLINE tank linings, offering exceptional cargo flexibility.

Speaking about the naming ceremony, David Cassidy, Chief Executive of Proman, said: “Naming Stena Provident and Stena Progressive at GSI is a fantastic milestone for the Proman Stena Bulk joint venture. We now have a market-leading fleet of future-proofed methanol tankers that clearly show the way for methanol as a marine fuel.

“That these two tankers will be time-chartered means that more players across the market can familiarize themselves with methanol and the considerable near-term benefits it can bring to their operations. We look forward to working with partners across the supply chain to continue demonstrating the upsides of using methanol today.”

Decarbonization Leadership

Erik Hånell, Stena Bulk’s President and CEO, highlighted GSI’s crucial role in the methanol-fueled tanker fleet’s realization during the naming of Stena Provident and Stena Progressive.

“Together, Stena Bulk, Proman and GSI have developed unique and industry-leading experience about how to make methanol shipping a reality; an experience that we hope to share more widely across our sector as we all work together to reach the ambitious decarbonization targets set out before us.”
