A naval training vessel set sail from New York last Saturday after spending six months in repairs due to a tragic collision with the Brooklyn Bridge. Hundreds of people gathered at Pier 86, close to the Intrepid Museum, to say their goodbyes, waving flags and enjoying cultural performances. Around 300 attendees were present for the ceremony, which included a military band playing national anthems. At precisely 3:20 p.m., the gangway was pulled back, and the crew embarked on their 35-day journey home, with families sharing heartfelt farewells, reports Marine Insight.

Accident and Investigation

This departure signified the end of a tough period for the crew. On May 17, the vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge while leaving Manhattan’s Pier 17. Despite the guidance of a docking pilot, it unexpectedly reversed, causing damage to its masts and rudder. Nineteen sailors sustained injuries, and tragically, two cadets lost their lives. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the cause of the sudden reversal, with findings anticipated next year.

Months of Repair and Restoration

After the collision, the vessel was taken to a shipyard in Staten Island for significant repairs, which included reconstructing the masts and thoroughly inspecting the propulsion and steering systems. By late September, it had completed sea trials and moved to Pier 86 for final preparations before its departure.

Symbol of Pride and Renewal

Mexico’s consul general in New York referred to the vessel as a representation of national maritime tradition and expressed appreciation to local authorities, first responders, and hospitals that assisted with the accident. Among those present at the farewell were family members of the crew and community members who offered prayers and blessings. Organisers of the event described the departure as a moment of renewal and hope for the future.

Setting Sail Again

As the vessel gracefully pulled away from the pier, the crowd erupted in applause, its newly rebuilt masts shining in the sunlight. With its sails catching the wind, it began the long journey home, bringing closure to a painful chapter and signalling a fresh start for the crew.
