In the afternoon of Jan 22, 2017, the cargo ship “Levant Horizon” ran aground in the estuary of the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. The ship got stuck around 2 p.m. when it was leaving the port of Lisbon.
Two tugs were called to refloat the unloaded ship and its crew. There were 14 crew members, Filipinos and some Portuguese, onboard the vessel. The grounding occurred when the ship passed a fairway buoys ahead of Paço de Arcos limiting the navigation area in and out of the Lisbon Bar on the wrong side. Since navigational responsibility belongs to the navigation officer and Master, they may have to explain what went wrong.
The ship was refloated after five hours since grounding and returned to Lisbon for safety inspection.
Fortunately there was no report of injuries or pollution from the incident. The investigation for the root cause of the incident has started.
