People who recovered from COVID-19 are more likely to acquire diabetes, according to a recent study, even if their case was minor as reported by Local12.

Researchers studied over 36,000 persons who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 but had not been admitted to the hospital.

The occurrences occurred between March 2020 and January 2021, prior to the discovery of the omicron variant.

They were 28% more likely to acquire type 2 diabetes than persons who had never had COVID-19.

Ignored hospitalization

This could be owing to the virus’s recognised effects on beta cells in the pancreas. These cells are in charge of insulin production.

The study did not take into account BMI, which is one of the most well-known diabetes risk factors.

COVID-19 infections that resulted in hospitalisation were also ignored.

Those cases have been connected to an increased risk of diabetes in the past.

The findings were published in Diabetologia, the Journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, on Wednesday.
