New BC Marine Energy And Decarbonization Hub To Propel Clean Energy Innovation

13

In a bold step toward Canada’s clean energy transition, two leaders in British Columbia’s ocean innovation sector have announced a joint initiative aimed at advancing the development and commercialization of marine renewable energy and decarbonization technologies. The BC Marine Energy and Decarbonization Hub, a key initiative of COAST, is delivered in partnership with the University of Victoria.

A Collaborative Effort to Drive Clean Energy Innovation

The BC Marine Energy and Decarbonization Hub represents the culmination of over 30 years of community-centered clean energy research and innovation led by the University of Victoria’s Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic), Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery (PRIMED), and Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET). The Hub is a catalyst for decarbonization technologies, paving the way for the next wave of ocean-based innovation in British Columbia and across Canada.

The initiative aims to provide new opportunities for ocean entrepreneurs, driving economic growth and creating jobs while addressing Canada’s national clean technology goals.

Supporting Marine Renewable Energy and Decarbonization

The Hub will leverage existing infrastructure and testing facilities to support ocean sector companies. Key focus areas include:

  • Marine renewable energy capture

  • Energy integration and management, including storage and grid integration

  • Innovative distribution of energy, including clean fuels production, storage, and transmission

This integrated approach aims to support both the development of marine renewable energy and the broader decarbonization of the ocean sector, creating a complementary and sustainable energy ecosystem.

Innovation Challenges and Future Opportunities

The Hub will drive progress through Innovation Challenges, issued in partnership with regional stakeholders. These challenges will invite companies to propose their technologies as solutions to key decarbonization challenges in the marine sector. The first challenge will be launched in late 2025, creating further opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

Funding and Long-Term Impact

The BC Marine Energy and Decarbonization Hub has secured funding from the federal government (Pacific Economic Development Canada), the provincial government (BC Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions), and the RBC Foundation. The Hub will operate for four years (2025-2028), supporting resource assessment, innovation, commercialization, project planning, and stakeholder engagement.

British Columbia’s unique geographical advantages—its largest maritime industry, extensive coastline, and coastal population—make it the ideal location for the Hub, which aims to become a focal point for marine clean energy innovation.
