The Industry Associations of BIMCO, ICS, IMCA, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO, and OCIMF, with the support of over 40 maritime stakeholders, have released an interactive Best Management Practices (BMP) for Maritime Security (MS). This consolidated publication aims to help vessels plan voyages, detect threats, and respond to attacks effectively.

Comprehensive Guidance for Maritime Security

BMP Maritime Security combines all regional BMP publications into a single, updated resource with actionable insights. Key features include:

  • A risk management framework to help vessels assess and mitigate threats.

  • Direct links to security intelligence sources for real-time updates.

  • Interactive diagrams and learning tools for seafarers.

  • Contact details for global security authorities and seafarer welfare support.

Addressing Growing Maritime Security Challenges

Maritime security threats have intensified, with 2024 seeing over 100 attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea and Southern Red Sea.

  • 126 seafarers were held hostage, and 12 were kidnapped in pirate attacks.

  • Weapons of war were used against commercial vessels, leading to casualties.

  • The Red Sea crisis and Ukraine conflict have worsened security risks for seafarers.

Industry Leaders’ Commitment to Seafarer Safety

BIMCO’s Secretary General, David Loosley, emphasized that BMP MS will reduce risks and save lives amid evolving threats.

Guy Platten (ICS) highlighted that recent conflicts have exposed seafarers to unprecedented dangers.

IMCA’s Iain Grainger praised BMP MS as a proactive risk management tool that ensures seafarers’ safety worldwide.

INTERCARGO’s Kostas G. Gkonis emphasized collaboration between naval forces and the maritime industry to protect seafarers.

INTERTANKO’s Tim Wilkins stressed that BMP is a vital reference for every vessel navigating conflict zones.

OCIMF’s Karen Davis noted that the new BMP replaces previous versions, providing clear, consolidated guidance on managing maritime threats.

BMP Maritime Security is now available online, offering essential protection strategies for vessels and crews. The publication marks a significant step in securing global maritime trade and safeguarding seafarers.
