The Port of Liverpool has opened its first deepwater bulk berth in 40 years, vastly improving its cargo handling capacity. Situated at Peel Ports Group’s Alexandra Complex, the £2 million investment is part of the company’s continued development plans, reports Peel Ports.

Inaugural Vessel and Capacity Expansion

The berth took its first arrival, the Andesborg, on Friday and is capable of handling ships up to handymax sizes. Coupled with the already operational N3 Alex berth, the addition will enhance the vessel handling capacity of both the Alexandra Complex as well as the entire Port of Liverpool.

Increased Storage and Handling Facilities

The Alexandra Complex of 534,000 sq. ft. has recently had a £28 million advanced warehouse developed within it. This is intended to be a one-stop solution to meet customers’ bulk storage and handling needs.

Commitment to Infrastructure and Supply Chains

Phill Hall, Mersey Port Director, Peel Ports Group, emphasised the significance of this development: “This is a significant moment for the Port of Liverpool. The addition of the new deep-water bulk berth will not only allow us to accommodate larger vessels, it will also improve the port’s overall ability to manage bulk cargo, providing more efficient cargo operations and helping us to keep supply chains moving.

“Not only does this project show our dedication to investing in infrastructure, when combined with our modern storage facilities the new berth ensures we can handle a diverse range of commodities and support customers with their needs.”
