The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum has released updated fire response guidelines to enhance preparedness for vehicle fires, including those involving lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles.
-
The guidelines emphasize the use of existing firefighting systems for early fire control.
-
Supported by prominent industry bodies such as the International Group of P&I Clubs and the International Chamber of Shipping, the guidelines aim to improve crew safety and environmental protection.
Published on April 24, 2025, the new guidelines focus on helping vessel operators and crews better prepare for and respond to vehicle fires onboard, specifically those caused by internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries. The guidelines are designed to reduce risks to crew members, passengers, the vessel, cargo, and the environment.
Key Recommendations
-
The guidelines encourage the use of fixed firefighting systems onboard vessels to control fires early in their development.
-
Emphasis is placed on responding promptly to vehicle fires, especially those involving EVs, which may require different firefighting tactics due to their battery-related hazards.
-
Vessel operators are urged to review and update their fire response policies and procedures in light of these recommendations.
Industry Support and Precedents
The guidelines have received backing from influential industry bodies:
-
International Group of P&I Clubs
-
International Chamber of Shipping
-
TT Club
This document marks the second industry good practice guideline published by the Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum, following the March 2024 release of the Common Guidance on Vehicle Loading and Presentation. The earlier guidelines focused on reducing risks associated with the shipment of unaccompanied vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles.
