A New Baltic Collaboration for Cleaner Shipping
As reported by Gasum, the Nordic energy company has signed a FuelEU Maritime pooling and bio-LNG agreement with Elenger, the fuel supplier for Tallink’s fleet. Under the deal, Gasum will supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) from its Pori terminal to Elenger, which will then be used onboard Tallink’s shuttle vessel MyStar.
The use of bio-LNG allows MyStar to generate additional compliance surplus for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool — a key advantage as operators prepare for tightening EU carbon-intensity rules.
Strengthening Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime Pool
Jacob Granqvist, VP Maritime at Gasum, said the company is “very happy” to welcome MyStar as a compliance generator. With the year-end approaching, Gasum is working to secure as much compliance volume as possible for its customers.
Tallink Group operates 11 passenger and cargo vessels between Estonia, Finland and Sweden. Bringing MyStar into the pool strengthens Gasum’s ability to support shipowners who need a reliable path to meeting the new regulation.
Tallink and Elenger Push Toward Renewable Fuels
According to Elenger CEO Margus Kaasik, Tallink has long been a frontrunner in the region, adopting LNG technology as early as 2017. He says the move toward renewable bio-LNG is the next natural step.
Tallink Group CEO Paavo Nõgene added that the company aims to fully replace LNG with liquefied biomethane on both shuttle vessels, MyStar and Megastar, within the next year. This shift would allow passengers and freight customers to reduce their environmental footprint by choosing Tallink.
Why Pooling Matters Under FuelEU Maritime
FuelEU Maritime, the EU’s new regulation to cut greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, requires vessels calling at EU ports to reduce the carbon intensity of their energy use. This pushes the industry toward cleaner fuels such as LNG and bio-LNG.
Pooling offers a cost-effective path to compliance. Vessels unable to run on LNG or bio-LNG can balance their emissions by joining a pool with vessels that can. Gasum’s pool is considered highly reliable because the company is both a producer and buyer of bio-LNG, ensuring supply and taking full contractual responsibility for all pooled vessels.
Gasum has also begun publishing the daily price of its compliance units, giving the market more transparency as the new regulation takes effect.
