On August 29, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group (WS) began construction on a new 25,900 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker for SC Shipping. This vessel is an upgraded model designed for enhanced performance, efficiency, and sustainability.
Vessel Specifications and Green Features
The new tanker has an overall length of 158.98 meters and a beam of 27 meters. It is designed to transport chemicals and refined oil products with a cruising range of 18,000 nautical miles. The vessel is powered by a low-speed diesel engine and is equipped with a high-pressure SCR system, which allows it to meet the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III NOx emission requirements. It also features a “methanol-ready” design, preparing it for future use of green fuel.
Optimized Design and Upgrades
As an upgraded version in its series, the vessel incorporates several key improvements. The cargo hold dividers have been adjusted, and a secondary heating system and hot oil coil cleaning system have been added to better suit the shipowner’s operational needs. The layout of the superstructure has been redesigned with a more human-centric concept to provide better conditions for the crew. Additionally, the installation of vortex-reducing fins and energy-saving ducts has significantly increased its speed, while an optimized exhaust gas utilization plan helps to reduce fuel consumption.
Progress and Company Profile
Construction on the 25,900 DWT chemical tanker series is proceeding on schedule, with the first vessel’s main hull already completed and others in advanced manufacturing stages. The design team has used the experience from the first five vessels to improve the outfitting process and optimize manufacturing for subsequent ships.
SC Shipping (Shanghai), the ship’s operator, manages a fleet of nearly 80 chemical tankers. The company is a leader in the global waterborne transport of fine liquid chemicals and has passed rigorous audits and inspections from major companies like BASF, Shell, and BP, confirming its strong standing in the industry.
