Danish Shipping has introduced a series of new recommendations aimed at creating a healthier and safer work environment on Danish-flagged ships, with a strong emphasis on preventing bullying and harassment. These guidelines, presented at the annual Blue Pride Bar and handed over to the Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov, focus on leadership, targeted training, and consistent monitoring. Developed in collaboration with industry leaders and trade organizations, these measures represent a significant step toward ensuring psychological security and a respectful workplace for all seafarers, reports Danish Shipping.
Introduction of New Recommendations
Danish Shipping has unveiled new best practice recommendations aimed at enhancing the safety and psychological well-being of seafarers on Danish-flagged ships. These guidelines were presented at the Blue Pride Bar and formally handed over to Morten Bødskov, Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs. The recommendations are part of a broader initiative announced in January 2024 to combat bullying and harassment at sea.
The recommendations are centered around three main principles:
- Lead from the Top: Leadership must actively promote a safe and respectful workplace. This involves setting clear expectations, establishing visible whistleblower schemes, and ensuring that all employees are aware of the procedures for reporting incidents.
- Focus on Challenges and Implement Training: Shipping companies are encouraged to identify specific challenges related to harassment and bullying. Targeted training programs should be implemented to address these issues and promote a culture of respect and psychological safety.
- Measure and Report Regularly: Regular monitoring and reporting on the work environment are essential. Shipping companies should measure the effectiveness of their initiatives and make adjustments as needed to maintain a safe and supportive environment.
Collaboration and Industry Commitment
These guidelines were developed in collaboration with member shipping companies, Metal Maritime, and the Danish Engineer’s Association. The industry’s commitment to these initiatives is seen as a vital step toward improving the recruitment and retention of seafarers. As Ole Philipsen, Chairman of Metal Maritime, noted, these guidelines reflect the shipping companies’ dedication to ensuring that all employees are treated with respect.
Minister Morten Bødskov expressed his support for the industry’s proactive approach, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe work environment for all seafarers, regardless of gender or background. Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need for continued cooperation between industry stakeholders to ensure psychological safety is given the same priority as physical safety.
