Crowley Maritime Corporation, a subsidiary of Jensen Maritime has come up with two new concepts for the LNG bunker barge.  The first concept is the outfitting of an existing barge with an above-deck LNG tank.  This concept can also be adapted to accommodate more than one type of product, with an arrangement of multiple liquid transfers.  This concept has an advantage for the customer who has the short-term LNG requirements.  The design has a  fast turnaround and a reduced need to invest in specialized assets.

The second concept is for a purpose-built, new bunker barge.  This design features a larger LNG tank nestled inside the barge offering greater carrying capacity with latest safety features and efficiencies.  Johan Sperling, the Vice President, shared that they offer different LNG marine solutions depending upon the requirement of their customers.  If their customer has an LNG required for the long or short term, or in larger or smaller quantities, they offer a bunkering solution with maximum flexibility.  All these designs are the result of company’s proprietary production engineering capabilities that make the outfitting, construction and assembly, more efficient.

The maritime industry is currently in a dilemma to develop first the LNG infrastructure or vessels.  These barges offer innovative solutions for those customers that have LNG needs at ports and not located near an LNG terminal.  They also offer an alternative to over-the-road transportation.
