At Nor-Shipping 2025, Lloyd’s Register (LR), HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) signed an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a groundbreaking Medium Range (MR) tanker design.
This next-generation 50,000 dwt vessel features a forward accommodation layout, aiming to advance maritime decarbonisation through innovative spatial and technical reconfiguration.
Forward Accommodation: A Shift in Ship Design
The proposed tanker relocates its accommodation block to the bow—departing from traditional midship or aft placement. This change enhances visibility for wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) and frees up central space for future integration of eco-friendly technologies such as ammonia dual-fuel engines and post-combustion carbon capture systems.
Enabling Decarbonisation Through Intelligent Design
The new layout solves existing spatial constraints that hinder the adoption of green technologies on conventional vessels. It also positions the ship to comply with upcoming environmental regulations. Designed with flexibility from the outset, this configuration reflects a proactive approach to future-proofing maritime assets.
This AiP signals a significant step toward sustainable shipping. By aligning innovative ship design with decarbonisation goals, LR, HMD, and LISCR are paving the way for commercially viable, regulation-ready vessels. The forward accommodation tanker is not just a structural change—it’s a symbol of the maritime industry’s evolving path toward net-zero.
