As OOCL prepares to welcome the third of six 21,000 TEU container vessels into its fleet, the box freight line has announced that one of the sister vessels of the ultra large container carriers as the recipient of a Guinness World Record Title.
At a naming ceremony at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard, OOCL christened the latest ship in its series of 21,413 TEU vessels. The OOCL Japan stands at almost 400 metres long and 58.8 metres wide, with a depth of 32.5 metres, and will be serving the Asia-Europe trade lane on the LL1 service and her port rotation, a 77 day round trip, will be as follows:
Shanghai / Ningbo / Xiamen / Yantian / Singapore / via Suez Canal / Felixstowe / Rotterdam / Gdansk / Wilhelmshaven / Felixstowe / via Suez Canal / Singapore / Yantian / Shanghai.
Commenting on the timing of the deployment of the 21,413 TEU vessels this year, Andy Tung, Chief Executive Officer of OOCL, said:

OOCL also revealed that the OOCL Hong Kong, the first vessel in ultra large vessel series, has officially been recorded as the first container ship in the world to exceed the 21,000 TEU mark. This is the second time that OOCL has a claimed a Guinness World Record, the first in April 2003 marking the 8,063 TEU vessel OOCL Shenzhen as the largest container ship, a sign of just how much these vessels types have grown in less than fifteen years. Celebrating the new record, Tung continued:
“Once again, we are very delighted to be setting yet another record with our long-time business partner because earlier this week, we have been confirmed by the Guinness World Records that the OOCL Hong Kong has officially been recorded as the world’s biggest containership by carry capacity at 21,413 TEU.”
