Newbuild Containership Contacts Quay To Avoid Collision

A newbuild container ship collided with quay at Port of Spain to avoid collision with crane, reports Maritime Bulletin.

What happened? 

Container ship CMA CGM KOUROU suffered engine failure while berthing at Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, at night Oct 24. She had arrived from Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Caribbean. 

The ship collided with quay at Port of Spain on October 24th as the captain maneuvered to avoid collision with the crane.

According to reports, the ship sustained minor damages. Authorities along with CMA CGM are working to fully assess the damages. Everyone ashore and onboard were reported to be safe.

Remains berthed

CMA CGM KOUROU was berthed and later commenced cargo operations, as of 0430 UTC Oct 26 she was at port.

Mention of explosion

Curiously, explosion was mentioned by dockers, prior to ship going NUC, in the engine room, according to an accident report. But later it was clarified that no explosion occurred.

About the vessel

Container ship CMA CGM KOUROU is a newbuild, IMO 9845659, dwt 26757, capacity 2200 TEU, built 2020, flag Cyprus, manager CMA CGM SA The French Line. She started her maiden voyage in Jan 2020.
