Swedish shipping company Terntank has officially taken delivery of Tern Vik, the first of five advanced 15,000 dwt hybrid tankers from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou). Delivered on April 22, 2025, the vessel marks a major milestone in sustainable maritime transport, featuring a suite of cutting-edge green technologies to significantly reduce emissions. It follows a naming ceremony held nearly a month earlier.
Designed for the Future: A Hybrid Powerhouse
Tern Vik is the inaugural vessel in Terntank’s Hybrid Solution Plus series, developed in collaboration with Norwegian firm Kongsberg. Designed with wind-assisted propulsion, methanol-ready engines, hybrid battery systems, and shore power capabilities, the vessel reflects the company’s commitment to environmentally friendly maritime operations. The design meets and even surpasses IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 standards, with reductions ranging from 16% to 40% below 2025 targets.
Built for Versatility and Efficiency
Equipped with 14 cargo tank segregations, Tern Vik ensures flexibility in transporting various cargoes while maximizing safety and operational efficiency. Developed based on insights from Terntank’s previous Avic series vessels, this newbuild boasts refined performance enhancements aimed at reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption.
Long-Term Partnership with NEOT
Following its maiden loading in Southeast Asia and discharge in Northern Europe, Tern Vik will enter long-term service with North European Oil Trade (NEOT). The Finnish oil and bioproducts specialist signed a charter agreement with Terntank in 2023, reinforcing its focus on low-emission transport solutions across the Nordic region.
Looking Ahead: More Hybrids to Follow
Tern Vik is the first of five Hybrid Solution Plus tankers ordered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. Its sister ship, Tern Land, is scheduled for delivery in spring 2025, with the full series expected to be operational by 2027. This green fleet expansion is poised to support the decarbonization of coastal and short-sea shipping in Europe.
