  • Aasen Shipping has received Aasvaer, a new 9,400 dwt hybrid methanol-ready cargo vessel built by Royal Bodewes.
  • The ship features a battery system for peak shaving and supports zero-emission port operations via shore power.
  • It carries a methyl/ethyl alcohol-fuel ready class notation, allowing future conversion to green methanol fuel.
  • Aasvaer is the first of three sister vessels ordered by Aasen Shipping, continuing its push for cleaner, more efficient shipping solutions.

Norwegian shipowner Aasen Shipping has welcomed its latest addition, Aasvaer—a hybrid, methanol-ready self-discharging general cargo vessel. Built by Royal Bodewes and delivered on October 17 after successful sea trials, the vessel marks another step in Aasen Shipping’s move toward sustainable maritime operations, according to Offshore Energy.

Hybrid design and methanol-ready capability

The 9,400 dwt Aasvaer represents a new generation of energy-efficient general cargo vessels. Equipped with a battery pack, the ship supports peak shaving for both its main and auxiliary engines, allowing smoother power distribution and reduced fuel consumption. The system also enables zero-emission operations while in port when connected to shore power. Measuring 120 meters in length, Aasvaer holds the methyl/ethyl alcohol-fuel ready class notation, which allows it to be retrofitted for green methanol propulsion in the future. This forward-looking design aligns with the growing industry trend toward low-carbon shipping solutions. The vessel is the first of three sister ships ordered by Aasen Shipping from Royal Bodewes in late 2023, with the second nearing launch. The partnership continues a successful collaboration that previously produced Aasfjell—the world’s first hybrid cargo vessel—and Aasfoss, both delivered in 2021 and 2022.
