  • NMP trained 22,972 Filipino seafarers in 2025, the highest since its founding
  • Local assessment access and new courses drove enrolment growth
  • Major budget, infrastructure, and training upgrades planned for 2026

The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) posted its strongest year on record in 2025, training 22,972 active and aspiring Filipino seafarers. This marks the highest annual intake since the institution began operations in 1983, reflecting sustained demand for accessible maritime training across the country.

Easier Access and Expanded Courses

The surge was supported by NMP’s continued rollout of new and updated training programs, increased class batches, and partnerships with maritime schools nationwide. A key milestone was NMP’s accreditation as an assessment centre, allowing seafarers in Eastern Visayas and nearby regions to complete mandatory assessments locally, reducing travel costs and time.

Research, Funding, and Infrastructure Push

Beyond training, NMP completed three research projects in 2025 covering women in maritime, seafarer health and wellness, and workforce challenges in the sector. Budget utilisation is projected at 99%, matched by a 99% client satisfaction rate. For 2026, NMP will receive its largest-ever allocation of PHP427 million, supporting dormitory rehabilitation, a new training pool, a firefighting facility, and expansion plans for new centres in Cavite and Davao.

Recognition and Industry Engagement

The year also saw the first Maritime Research, Education, and Training Summit hosted by NMP, alongside the presentation of its inaugural Outstanding Alumnus award. The institution capped the year with its first official visit by the President, highlighting upgraded simulators and reaffirming NMP’s growing role in strengthening the Filipino seafaring workforce.
