  • CHIC and Norsepower Collaborate to Meet Growing Demand for Wind-Powered Shipping.

Norsepower, the global leader in wind propulsion, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (Nantong) Co., Ltd. (CHIC). The deal is intended to drive serial production, sales, installation, and servicing of Norsepower Rotor Sails™ in the area, reports Norsepower.

Enhancing Manufacturing Capacity in China

The collaboration leverages Norsepower’s Rotor Sail™ Factory in Dafeng, China, the first-ever factory solely focused on rotor sail production. This factory guarantees the required capacity and high-quality output for Norsepower’s solutions. Coupled with Norsepower’s sole production centre in Poland, this new collaboration with CHIC further improves the company’s capability to satisfy growing global demand.

Utilizing Shipbuilding Knowledge for Innovation

With the help of CHIC’s vast resources in shipbuilding and offshore equipment, the collaboration will promote innovation in wind propulsion technology. The joint effort is aimed at providing shipping companies with practical and economical solutions to lower fuel consumption and emissions, aligned with the increasingly stringent regulations imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Comments from Norsepower and CHIC Leadership

Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower, commented on the significance of the agreement: “This agreement marks a significant step forward in expanding access to wind propulsion solutions in China. By combining Norsepower’s technology leadership with CHIC’s shipbuilding expertise, we are creating a strong foundation for advancing sustainable shipping. We will achieve breakthroughs in both product supply efficiency and application expansion. We look forward to building on this collaboration and exploring further opportunities together.”

Zhang Jianxin, Deputy General Manager of CHIC, also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are excited to partner with Norsepower to advance wind propulsion technology. This cooperation will enhance innovation across product design, manufacturing, and business development, ensuring we deliver high-quality, energy-efficient solutions for the shipping industry.”

Commitment to a Low-Carbon Future

As increasing regulatory pressure mounts to decarbonize shipping, Norsepower’s collaboration with CHIC reinforces the growing momentum around wind propulsion. Through the sharing of expertise and resources, the two firms are collectively committed to driving faster uptake of sustainable products and helping the industry transition to a low-carbon future.
