- North Star has signed landmark agreements with RWE for four hybrid-powered commissioning/service operation vessels (C/SOVs), marking the largest deal in its history.
- The agreements will support up to 200 jobs, including the creation of 100 new roles, and significantly expand North Star’s offshore wind fleet.
- The collaboration includes long-term charters for two existing vessels and reservations for two newbuilds, strengthening North Star’s presence across the UK and Europe.
North Star has entered into a multi-vessel agreement with RWE, one of the world’s leading offshore wind developers. The package includes two confirmed long-term charter contracts and two reservation agreements for future vessels. This marks the most substantial commitment to date in the offshore wind service sector and the biggest single deal for North Star.
Fleet Expansion and Job Creation
The four-vessel agreement will support up to 200 positions across North Star’s operations, including the addition of 100 new onshore and offshore roles. These roles will support the growing offshore wind sector and provide career opportunities for both existing employees and new talent.
Operational Vessel Details
Two of the vessels—the Grampian Eagle and Grampian Kestrel—are next-generation hybrid C/SOVs delivered in 2025. These ships are already operational, futureproofed for alternative low-emission fuels, and will support RWE’s maintenance efforts in the North Sea.
The Grampian Eagle is scheduled to support the Triton Knoll wind farm off the British coast for a minimum of 12 years, while the Grampian Kestrel will be deployed to RWE’s German wind farms near Heligoland for at least 10 years, beginning winter 2025. Both contracts include extension options of up to three years.
Interim Solutions and Future Vessels
To maintain seamless operations before North Star’s vessels are available, RWE will use two interim ships provided by Windward Offshore. This collaborative effort ensures uninterrupted service delivery.
Additionally, RWE and North Star have signed reservation agreements for two newly built SOVs. These vessels will be designed and constructed by global shipbuilder VARD and are expected to be delivered in 2028 and 2029.
Strategic Growth and Design
The newbuilds will be based on VARD’s proven 4 19 design and feature advanced technology, including a motion-compensated gangway with elevator, boat landing system, and accommodation for up to 120 personnel. These hybrid battery-equipped and methanol-ready vessels align with North Star and RWE’s sustainability goals.
