  • Norway and Brazil collaborate on developing suitable routes and zero-emission fuels.
  • IMO’s 2050 Net-Zero Shipping Target Guides Norway-Brazil Project.
  • Norway and Brazil to Present Green Shipping Routes at COP30.

Norway and Brazil are joining forces to promote climate-friendly shipping by establishing fixed routes between Brazil and Europe. These routes will employ ships using advanced technology and low-emission fuels, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reports Government.no.

Norway’s Vision for Green Shipping

Finally, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre reiterated Norway’s role as a forerunner in green shipping, underlining its proud maritime culture. He reminded me of the significance of collaboration with Brazil to develop a pioneering project that would set an example for the whole world concerning environmentally friendly shipping. It will also be a chance for Norwegian shipyards and create work opportunities along Norway’s coast.

Climate-Friendly Shipping Corridors

Norway came up with the shipping corridors concept during the 2021 Glasgow Climate Summit (COP26), where it and other nations agreed to create routes between ports for zero or near-zero-emission shipping. The corridors are part of an international effort against the approximately 3% of greenhouse gas emissions credited to shipping.

Green Transatlantic Corridor

The two countries are targeting a transatlantic shipping lane – Norway and Brazil have begun a pilot project with industry partners from both countries to identify and develop suitable routes and ports and to develop zero-emission fuels.

Zeroing in on IMO’s Net-Zero Goals

HSH Minister Tore O. Sandvik emphasised the importance of the 2023 IMO strategy, which aims at reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in international shipping by 2050. Norway and Brazil intend to prove that long-distance transport can also achieve this ambitious goal.

Next Steps: Presentation at COP30.

Over the coming year, Norway and Brazil will be reviewing specific transatlantic routes for climate-friendly shipping. The two countries will present their findings and proposed routes at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil in 2025 as part of showing joint efforts in advancing green maritime initiatives.
