Norway’s GC Rieber Shipping to Build Zero-Emission Battery-Powered Vessel

11

Norwegian shipping company GC Rieber Shipping has signed a letter of intent for the construction of a fully electric battery-powered freight carrier. This significant move is part of Norway’s broader push towards zero-emission maritime transport.

Collaboration for Sustainable Logistics

Sætre & Sønner, a company specializing in the transportation of bulk commodities and general cargo in the North Sea, will operate the new vessel. The project is a collaborative effort, developed in close partnership with freight owners GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals, both of whom are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their supply chains. The core aim is to demonstrate the commercial and environmental viability of battery-electric propulsion in coastal freight operations.

Einar Ytredal, CEO at GC Rieber Shipping, commented on the importance of the Enova grant: “This support from Enova enables us to accelerate the transition to zero-emission shipping. Together with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals, we are proud to lead the way in developing cleaner, more efficient maritime transport solutions.”

Vessel Features and Environmental Impact

The new vessel will be optimized for short-sea operations along the Norwegian coast. It will feature advanced battery systems and shore power integration, allowing it to operate fully electric. This is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution compared to conventional diesel-powered ships.

GC Rieber Shipping has an ambitious goal to realize zero-emission vessels across multiple segments of its fleet. This project is deemed an important step in gaining both development and operational experience with battery-electric systems, which will serve as a foundational experience for the broader adoption of clean technologies within the company’s fleet. The initiative underscores Norway’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices and its leadership in green shipping innovation.
