Novak Djokovic Makes history
Novak Djokovic has made history again. No other male or female player has spent more time as the tennis world number 1.
The Serb is beginning his 378th week at the top of men’s singles tennis – taking him out of a tie with Germany’s legend Steffi Graf and into sole first place.
Djokovic’s 378 weeks at the summit of the ATP Rankings began in July 2011, and he overtook Roger Federer (310) for most time spent at men’s number 1 in March 2021 with his 311th week.
World no.1
His current spell at world number 1 began last month, after he clinched his 10th Australian Open title win in January.
With his continued dominance on the ATP Tour circuit, Djokovic has now headed the ATP or WTA Rankings for more time than anyone else.
Women’s world no.1
Graf’s 377 weeks at the peak of the WTA Rankings began in 1987, including spending all of 1988, 1989, 1990, 1994, and 1996 as the women’s world number 1.
The German’s record span at the top of the women’s charts lasted 186 weeks from August 1987 through March 1991, a mark that remains out of Djokovic’s reach as the Serb’s personal record streak is 122 weeks, from July 2014 through November 2016.
