7

NSW Ports has successfully achieved Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions for its direct operations, marking a significant sustainability milestone. This achievement, independently verified, is the result of a multi-year decarbonization program outlined in the organization’s FY25 Sustainability Report.

Initiatives Driving the Achievement

Since 2022, NSW Ports has implemented a range of green initiatives across its sites at Port Botany, Port Kembla, and the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre. These include:

  • Signing two Power Purchase Agreements to source renewable energy from wind farms.

  • Installing two major solar projects at the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre to offset grid electricity.

  • Introducing energy reduction measures such as lighting upgrades, HVAC optimization, and automation of equipment.

  • Phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles in favor of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models.

  • Offsetting minimal residual emissions through high-quality Australian Carbon Credit Units.

Commitment to Sustainable Operations

According to CEO Marika Calfas, this achievement highlights NSW Ports’ organization-wide commitment to its 2022–2025 Sustainability Strategy and Master Plan. These efforts have already reduced electricity usage by 16% at Port Botany, 10% at Port Kembla, and 45% at Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre. Additional sustainability efforts include the introduction of a Supplier Code of Conduct, Community Boat Tours, and ongoing infrastructure upgrades to improve freight movement efficiency.

NSW Ports’ Net Zero milestone underscores its strong dedication to reducing environmental impact and advancing long-term sustainability. By investing in renewable energy, efficient operations, and community-focused initiatives, NSW Ports continues to set an example for sustainable port management and greener logistics in Australia.
