- Two charter agreements signed for ammonia carriers
- Cargo to move from the U.S. to Japan for power generation
- Project marks a first commercial fuel-ammonia shipment to Japan
NYK Bulkship (Asia) has signed two heads of agreements with JERA covering time-charter contracts for ammonia carriers. The vessels will be used to transport low-carbon ammonia produced in the U.S. state of Louisiana to Japan. The move represents a concrete step toward commercialising ammonia as an energy fuel.
First Commercial Fuel-Ammonia Shipment
The ammonia will be supplied from JERA’s Blue Point Project and delivered to its Hekinan Thermal Power Station in central Japan. Once operational, this is expected to become the first commercial shipment of fuel ammonia into the Japanese market, supporting efforts to reduce emissions from power generation.
Expanding the Ammonia Value Chain
Ammonia is gaining attention as a next-generation energy source due to its carbon-free combustion. NYK said it will leverage its experience in ammonia handling, safety management, and vessel operations to support stable transport. Both companies aim to accelerate the development of a low-carbon ammonia supply chain through maritime logistics.
