NYK and its group company NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. (NYKSM) carried out a crisis-response drill on October 17 simulating a large-scale accident off the coast of Okinawa Island, the company said in a statement.

The exercise scenario involved a fire breaking out in the cargo hold of a car carrier owned and operated by NYK and managed by NYKSM.

During firefighting operations, the vessel collided with a small craft. The drill was part of the “Remember Naka-no-Se” safety promotion campaign and was conducted in cooperation with the Maritime Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, and the Japanese Shipowners’ Association.

The simulation included emergency communication, firefighting, rescue operations, and coordination with relevant authorities. NYK and NYKSM also conducted a mock press conference with participation from Managing Executive Officers Yutaka Ikeda and Hisaya Higuchi.

Offices of NYKSM in Singapore and India joined the exercise remotely to coordinate the response to the fire and collision.

The “Remember Naka-no-Se” campaign, which started in 1998, was created to ensure that lessons from the 1997 Diamond Grace oil spill remain part of NYK’s safety culture. This year marks the 28th iteration of the campaign
