  • Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has acquired an 80% stake in NYK Energy Ocean Corporation (NEO) for approximately 76 billion yen, expanding its energy transportation business.
  • With NEO’s fleet of 47 vessels, NYK now operates one of the world’s largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier businesses, strengthening its position in energy transport.
  • By integrating ENEOS Ocean’s high-quality fleet and experienced personnel, NYK aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and cost competitiveness in marine transport.

On April 1, 2025, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) announced the acquisition of an 80% stake in NYK Energy Ocean Corporation (NEO), a newly formed entity that has assumed the majority of ENEOS Ocean’s shipping operations, excluding its crude-oil tanker segment. The acquisition is valued at approximately 76 billion yen.

Bolstering LNG/LPG carrier business

NEO’s fleet comprises 47 vessels: 18 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, 18 chemical and product tankers, and 11 cargo ships. When combined with NYK’s existing 16 LPG carriers, the NYK Group emerges as one of the world’s largest LPG carrier operators.

This strategic move aligns with NYK’s objective to bolster its LNG/LPG carrier business, ensuring stable energy transportation. By integrating over 100 skilled employees and a high-quality fleet from ENEOS Ocean, and by enhancing collaboration with the ENEOS Group, NYK aims to drive growth and create synergies within the energy transportation sector.

Koichi Chikaraishi, President of NEO, stated, “Today, NYK Energy Ocean Corporation has been established. ENEOS Ocean provides high-quality marine transport services to companies in Japan and overseas. NYK Energy Ocean, which has taken over this business, will continue to accurately grasp customers’ needs and aim to achieve reliable and efficient marine transport based on the philosophy that safety comes first. Furthermore, by becoming a member of the NYK Group, we will leverage the benefits of scale to improve quality control and cost competitiveness.”
