NYK and Astomos Energy Corporation celebrated the naming of a new very large gas carrier (VLGC) “Liberty Pathfinder” at Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ Sakaide Works in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. This event, reported by NYK, marks a significant step towards future decarbonization as the vessel supports NYK’s sustainability goals under its “Sail Green” initiative.

Innovative Dual-Fuel Capabilities

The “Liberty Pathfinder” features a dual-fuel engine that can operate on both heavy oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Additionally, the vessel includes a shaft generator that enables full LPG-fueled navigation, reducing sulfur oxides by over 95% and carbon dioxide emissions by over 20% compared to traditional heavy oil-fueled vessels, contributing to NYK’s efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Enhanced Environmental Impact with Ammonia Transport

The vessel is also equipped to carry ammonia, a promising fuel for future decarbonization. This ability allows the “Liberty Pathfinder” to support evolving market demands and aligns with NYK’s vision of promoting a sustainable, low-carbon supply chain while strengthening its partnership with Astomos Energy.

Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

Part of NYK’s “Sail Green” brand, the vessel contributes to NYK’s medium-term management plan to drive transformation with a focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. The plan emphasizes deepening core businesses while co-creating value for future generations, demonstrating NYK’s commitment to sustainable growth and a low-carbon economy.
