NYK Line has taken a proactive step in enhancing fire safety aboard its car carriers by hosting Japan’s first-ever onboard inspection in collaboration with local firefighting authorities.
Inspection Background
The inspection, held on June 20, 2025, brought together over 40 participants, including officials from the Tokyo Fire Department, Yokohama City Fire Bureau, and local cargo-handling companies. The initiative is part of NYK’s ongoing efforts to address the increasing global concern over fires involving car carriers, especially as they begin transporting more next-generation vehicles such as electric and fuel-cell cars.
In recent years, a number of fire incidents on vessels around the world have highlighted the vulnerabilities of car carriers, particularly while moored at ports where dock workers are present and the risk of damage and casualties is higher. The complex internal structure of these vessels and the specialized nature of their equipment make it challenging for land-based firefighting teams to respond effectively. In response to these challenges, NYK has been working to improve fire safety by updating transportation guidelines, strengthening crew training programs, and integrating digital tools such as remote firefighting devices.
Inspection Details
During the inspection, NYK’s maritime officers guided participants through the ship’s cargo decks and firefighting systems, offering firsthand insight into the vessel’s design and operational safety features. This was followed by a scenario-based discussion session focused on emergency response strategies, particularly emphasizing the importance of clear communication and coordination between the ship’s crew and shore-based firefighting teams. The dialogue allowed both parties to align their understanding of onboard conditions and tactical responses in case of a real fire.
This event marks the first time such an inspection has been conducted aboard a car carrier while moored in Japan. NYK has previously held similar drills in North America, Europe, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Building on the success of those overseas exercises, the company now plans to expand these collaborative efforts throughout its global network. The goal is to ensure that firefighting teams around the world are better prepared to handle emergencies involving car carriers, ultimately reinforcing the safety of both crew members and port workers.
