- NYK Line has begun using bio-LNG fuel continuously on its LNG-powered car carriers, starting with the Daisy Leader and Sumire Leader.
- Bio-LNG, produced from organic waste, is carbon-neutral throughout its entire life cycle and certified under the ISCC EU standards.
- This initiative supports NYK’s goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
- The collaboration with Titan highlights joint industry efforts to accelerate the shift to low-emission marine fuels.
NYK Line has begun using bio-LNG fuel continuously on its LNG-powered car carriers. The fuel, supplied by Titan Supply B.V. at the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, was first bunkered on Daisy Leader in June, followed by Sumire Leader in July. This move supports NYK’s broader commitment to decarbonizing its fleet and contributing to a low-carbon future, as reported by NYK Line.
Expanding Carbon-Neutral Fuel Use to Support Net-Zero Goals
NYK Line has taken a significant step toward cleaner marine operations by continuing to use bio-LNG fuel on its LNG-powered car carriers. Bio-LNG, also known as liquefied biomethane, is derived from organic waste materials, including animal manure and food waste. By capturing and purifying methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, the fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over its full life cycle. The bio-LNG supplied by Titan, under the mass balance method, is recognized as carbon neutral from production to consumption and is certified under the ISCC EU sustainability standard.
NYK’s use of bio-LNG aligns with its long-standing efforts to lower emissions from shipping. The company has operated LNG-fueled vessels for several years and outlined its net-zero GHG emissions target by 2050 in its 2023 NYK Group Decarbonization Story. The adoption of bio-LNG is a key element in achieving this goal, reflecting NYK’s broader strategy to shift toward more sustainable energy sources in the maritime transport sector.
Titan’s CEO, Niels den Nijs, commended NYK’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in supporting the shipping sector’s transition to low-emission fuels. NYK’s Fuel Group General Manager, Kaori Takahashi, also highlighted the value of bio-LNG in helping the company reduce its environmental footprint and move closer to its sustainability goals.
