A joint venture comprising NYK, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), MISC Berhad, and China LNG Shipping has officially named two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers built for QatarEnergy. The ceremony, held on December 3 at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, marks another milestone in QatarEnergy’s major fleet expansion program. The vessels, named Sharq and Shra’ouh, represent the seventh and eighth ships of a 12-vessel order and will soon join global LNG transport routes.

Naming Ceremony Highlights and Delivery Timeline

The vessels were named Sharq, after a district east of Doha, and Shra’ouh, after a Qatari island. Senior executives from all partner companies attended the ceremony, including NYK President & CEO Takaya Soga and top leaders from HD Hyundai, COSCO Shipping, K Line, MISC Berhad, and China Merchants Energy Shipping.

Sharq is slated to begin worldwide LNG transport operations in December, while Shra’ouh will enter service in January 2026. NYK Group will manage the operation of Shra’ouh, further strengthening its leadership in LNG shipping. These deliveries form part of QatarEnergy’s massive shipbuilding program, ensuring long-term, stable LNG supply to markets worldwide.

Advanced Vessel Technology to Support Cleaner Shipping

Both LNG carriers incorporate the latest innovations to improve efficiency and cut emissions. They are equipped with two X-DF 2.1 iCER dual-fuel engines, capable of operating on both fuel oil and boil-off gas. Each ship also features an air lubrication system that forms air bubbles along the hull to reduce drag, and a reliquefaction unit that re-liquefies excess boil-off gas, enhancing cargo efficiency.

With a cargo capacity of 174,000 m³, a length of 299 meters, and a beam of 46.4 meters, the vessels are designed to deliver high performance while minimizing environmental impact. These technologies align with NYK Group’s “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026” strategy, which emphasizes sustainable operations and the expansion of LNG and LPG carrier businesses.

The naming of Sharq and Shra’ouh demonstrates the NYK-led joint venture’s commitment to supporting QatarEnergy’s ambitious LNG expansion plans. With advanced energy-efficient systems and strong global partnerships, these vessels will enhance the reliability of LNG transportation while contributing to environmentally responsible maritime operations. NYK’s involvement further reinforces its position as a global leader in LNG shipping, helping secure stable and sustainable energy supply for the future.
