NYK Line and Port of Duqm Partner to Advance Green Energy Hub in Oman

16

The partnership between NYK Line and the Port of Duqm Company (PODC) is a strategic collaboration to enhance the port’s connectivity and promote sustainable, green industry growth in Oman, leveraging the country’s potential in renewable energy.

Primary Objectives of the MOU

The core goal of the Memorandum of Understanding is to advance the development of Duqm Port with a strong focus on decarbonization and establishing it as a green energy hub. This aligns with Oman’s national vision to become a major player in the global hydrogen economy.

Key Areas of Collaboration

The partnership focuses on three specific domains that support the energy transition and improve logistical efficiency:

  • Green Energy Production and Transport: Promoting the production and maritime transport of green energy carriers like hydrogen and ammonia, capitalizing on Oman’s significant solar and wind resources. This positions Duqm as a major export hub for clean fuels.
  • Green Steel Industry Support: Collaborating to support the emerging green steel industry in Duqm, which typically involves the use of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) to reduce $\text{CO}_2$ emissions.
  • Finished Vehicle Transportation: Developing alternative solutions for finished vehicle transportation within the Middle East region.

Strategic Importance of Duqm Port

The Port of Duqm is key to this partnership due to its distinct geographical and economic advantages:

  • Strategic Location: It is situated outside the Strait of Hormuz, providing a non-chokepoint gateway.
  • Connectivity: Its location offers proximity to key regions including the Middle East, India, and East Africa, enhancing global supply chain connectivity.
  • Economic Zone: The port is integrated into the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), which offers incentives designed to attract heavy and light industries, especially those focused on green technology.
