NYK Partners With STAX For Emissions Capture Technology

31

NYK has signed an agreement with STAX Engineering to use its emissions capture and control technology on NYK-operated car carriers in California. This initiative aims to comply with California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) expanded exhaust emission regulations, reports NYK.

Emission Capture and Control

Emissions capture and control technology involves connecting a barge, a small flat-bottomed ship, or a land-based system to a vessel’s funnel via steel pipes and hoses. This system captures exhaust gases, preventing their release into the atmosphere.

NYK plans to utilize this technology to provide exhaust gas capture services for NYK-operated car carriers at major California ports. The total potential payment between NYK and STAX is estimated at $16 million.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) established emission regulations for oceangoing vessels in 2007. In 2014, CARB mandated that oceangoing container ships, passenger ships, and other vessels reduce their emissions while at berth.

CARB plans to include car carriers and tankers in these regulations in 2025, making it a critical issue that needs to be addressed urgently.
