Recognition and Achievement
NYK has been honored for its exceptional performance in the 2023 Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies vessel speed reduction (VSR) incentive program along the West Coast of North America. This marks the second consecutive year NYK has attained the Sapphire tier, the highest ranking in the program. The initiative is a collaborative effort sponsored by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and other partners.
Program Goals and Evaluation
The VSR program aims to protect marine life, particularly whales, and reduce air pollution by encouraging voluntary vessel speed reductions in the Santa Barbara Channel and the San Francisco Bay area. From May 1 to December 15, 2023, the program partners analyzed each participating company’s automatic information system (AIS) data. The evaluation focused on the adherence to the recommended transit speed of 10 knots or less through the designated VSR zones. Impressively, over 85% of NYK’s operating vessels maintained a navigation speed below this threshold.
Commitment to Environmental Preservation
NYK is dedicated to preserving the marine environment and biodiversity as part of its mission as a global ocean operator. The company’s continuous efforts in reducing air pollution and protecting marine life highlight its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Strategic Vision and Future Goals
On March 10, 2023, the NYK Group launched its medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” This strategy places environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles at its core, aligning with the Group’s philosophy of “Bringing value to life” and its new corporate vision for 2030. NYK aims to advance its core business while fostering new growth areas, contributing to the co-creation of value for the future.
