Ocean Container Freight Rates Edge Higher as Carriers Manage Capacity Ahead of 2026

Xeneta’s weekly ocean container shipping market update shows that in the week ending 6 November 2025 the average spot rate from the Far East to the US West Coast reached USD 2,756 per FEU, while Far East to US East Coast averaged USD 3,492 per FEU and Far East to North Europe came in at USD 2,293 per FEU.

In terms of offered capacity on major fronthaul trades (4-week rolling average to 3–9 November):

  • Far East → US West Coast: +4.1% week-on-week, 5.5% month-on-month
  • Far East → US East Coast: 0.7% week-on-week, 4.4% month-on-month
  • Far East → North Europe: 5.8% week-on-week, 11.9% month-on-month
  • Far East → Mediterranean: 1.0% week-on-week, 7.5% month-on-month
  • North Europe → US East Coast: +19.8% week-on-week, +1.8% month-on-month

Spot-rate movements also stood out:

  • Far East → US West Coast saw a week-on-week jump of +28.2%;
  • Far East → Mediterranean rose +24.4%, reaching about USD 2,899 per FEU.
  • The spread between rates for Far East → US West Coast and Far East → US East Coast narrowed to a one-year low of USD 736 per FEU.

Xeneta’s Chief Analyst noted that carriers are actively managing capacity as they enter the important contract-tender season for 2026. Although demand remains subdued, constrained offered capacity is supporting the recent uptick in spot rates.
