  • Norsepower Rotor Sails have been installed on the VLGC Oceanus Aurora to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and costs.
  • The installation, reported by Borealis, was completed in Rotterdam in early November 2024.
  • The sails harness wind and the Magnus effect, cutting CO₂ emissions by approximately 4%.
  • Borealis and IINO Lines emphasize the project’s role in achieving international decarbonization targets.

Norsepower, in collaboration with Borealis and IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO Lines), has completed the installation of its Rotor Sails on the Oceanus Aurora, a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC). As reported by Borealis, the retrofitting was finalized in Rotterdam in early November 2024, marking a significant step in sustainable shipping innovation.

Harnessing the Power of Wind and Magnus Effect

The Norsepower Rotor Sails, inspired by the Flettner rotor design, utilize a small amount of electricity to spin cylindrical sails, leveraging wind and the Magnus effect to generate thrust. This innovation reduces reliance on conventional fuel, achieving a projected 4% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Tailored to the Oceanus Aurora’s specifications, the two Rotor Sails measure 20 meters in height and 4 meters in diameter, designed to meet the vessel’s air draught limits. The VLGC, delivered in March 2023, operates on routes connecting Houston (USA) to Stenungsund (Sweden) and Porvoo (Finland).

A Partnership for Environmental Leadership

Borealis, a leader in polyolefins and base chemicals, views the project as integral to its Energy & Climate strategy. Senior Vice President Thomas Van De Velde highlighted the Rotor Sails as a critical component in reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

IINO Lines, represented by Executive Officer Seiichi Fujimura, reinforced their commitment to sustainable shipping by adopting technologies that align with international decarbonization goals.

Advancing Green Shipping Technologies

Norsepower’s CEO, Heikki Pöntynen, emphasized the tangible benefits of the company’s Rotor Sails, which are operational on 27 vessels worldwide. With their ability to reduce emissions and fuel costs, these sails play a pivotal role in advancing global sustainability efforts within the maritime sector.

This collaboration between Norsepower, Borealis, and IINO Lines signifies a progressive step toward integrating green technologies in shipping, aligning with global environmental targets and reducing operational costs.
