India is moving forward with plans to expand its maritime infrastructure through the development of a new major port at Bahuda in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The Rs 215 billion project, undertaken jointly by Paradip Port Authority, Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd, and the Odisha government, will become the 14th major port under Union government ownership once completed. The development highlights India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime network, according to a report by Accuracy Shipping Limited.
Bahuda Port: Expanding Eastern India’s Trade Potential
The proposed Bahuda port is designed to handle dry bulk carriers between 40,000 and 150,000 deadweight tonnes and container vessels with a capacity of up to 6,000 TEUs. By providing advanced shipping capabilities, the port will support efficient cargo movement and drive port-led industrialization along Odisha’s coastline. A memorandum of understanding for the project is scheduled to be signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formalizing cooperation among key stakeholders.
With critical funding support from Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd for modernization, connectivity, and community development, the project is expected to spur economic growth across eastern India. The Bahuda port will complement nearby facilities at Paradip, Dhamra, and Gopalpur, reinforcing India’s position as a growing force in global maritime trade.
