Offshore Support Vessel Runs On Green Hydrogen In The German Wadden Sea

71

Marine Link stated that Coastal Liberty, an offshore support vessel (OSV) operated by Acta Marine, has successfully transitioned to running on green hydrogen in a bid to lower environmental impact. Using a containerized hydrogen-electric energy system developed by eCap Marine, the vessel now operates with zero emissions, blending hydrogen fuel cells with a maritime battery system. This setup, engineered by eCap Marine and certified by DNV in early 2024, enables emission-free operations and positions the Coastal Liberty as a sustainable solution in the offshore industry.

Innovative Hydrogen System and Localized Fuel Production

The system features two 200kW Ballard FCwave fuel cells, battery technology from Lehmann Marine, and an advanced power management setup for reliable and emission-free power. The hydrogen used is sustainably produced with offshore wind energy at a nearby electrolyzer facility, capable of scaling up as demand grows. With safety and efficiency at the forefront, the system includes swappable high-pressure tanks that allow for quick and tool-free replacements, facilitated by crane and truck connections.

Enhanced Efficiency and Comfort for Crew

The hydrogen-electric system reduces vibrations on board, providing the crew with smoother propulsion and a more comfortable working environment. Acta Marine’s innovation showcases the potential of green hydrogen as a scalable, environmentally friendly fuel alternative for various vessel types and longer sea voyages.
