Oil Leakage Detected from Ship Grounded by Hurricane

A Bulk carrier has reportedly gone aground near Manzanillo during Hurricane Patricia.

What happened?

The bull carrier was caught in Hurricane Patricia which caused severe structural damages on 23 October, 2015.

Oil leak reported:

The structural damage on the bull carrier has caused oil leaking. Authorities from the environmental protection agency, Profepa, inspected the surrounding and found considerable amount of oil leakage from the bulker.

Profepa orders captain to contain oil:

The authorities have asked the Captain of the ship to order the ship’s owner to contain the oil spill using booms around the surrounding areas of the spill.

Ships remains grounded and on the verge of breakage:

The ship caught in the hurricane continues to remain aground and on the verge of breaking apart. Oil stains and iridescence were found in the waters around the ship and the smell of oil is continuously detected near the vessel.

The leaking oil is considered to be remnants of petroleum products remaining in the ship’s tanks, which were pumped out following the accident. A salvage firm removed 11,000 liters of oil and almost 500 cubic meters of diesel.

Locals upset with restrictions:

The Local fishermen were upset after authorities prohibited shipping boats from approaching the wrecked bulker. The livelihood of over 100 fisherman have been affected by restrictions which were necessary for security purposes.
