Its reported that a 39-year-old Australian crew member onboard Skandi Pacific (3,107 dwt, built 2011)  got crushed between a moving container and a cargo skip.  The crew members were attempting to secure cargo during rough weather.

The seafarer was identified as Andrew Kelly, from Newcastle in New South Wales.  He leaves behind his wife and four children.

DOF said the incident occurred around 5.30 am local time on 14th July.  Immediately all operations were suspended and the emergency response team mobilised to deal with the situation.

“People’s safety and the welfare of their families is our priority. We are doing everything we can to support the families and other crew members. The Skandi Pacific will be met by DOF representatives and a team of professional counselors will be on-hand to offer support and care for the crew on-board.” States DOF.

The Maritime Union of Australia Secretary Paddy Crumlin commented that it was a sad and tragic day.  “My and all the MUA’s thoughts are with the Kelly family in particular along with his workmates on this unfortunate day,” Crumlin said.
